As expected, Kevlar is used for many things. It is now being used to replace asbestos in brake pads. But it’s not just military vehicles that are starting to incorporate Kevlar. Kevlar is a heat-resistant and strong synthetic fiber, related to other aramids such as Nomex and Technora. Presently, Kevlar fiber is available in a number of variants: Kevlar K-29 – It is a high toughness grade used in industrial applications, such as cables, body/vehicle armor, brake linings. Asbestos can be very toxic and dangerous, and Kevlar has been a great replacement. Typically it is spun into ropes or fabric sheets that can be used as such or as an ingredient in composite material components. Developed by Stephanie Kwolek at DuPont in 1965, this high-strength material was used first commercially in the early 1970s as a replacement for steel in racing tires.

Kevlar K49 – It has a high modulus used in rope and cable products. Its industrial applications include being used to make hoses, belts and reinforcement materials.
